Painkiller Blues

My plan to rollback the use of the opioid background painkillers to tramadol (Ultracet) was carried out over the last three days. Although I managed to do it, the results was rather painful. I think the pain was rather bad and unbearable at times, especially at night. Ultracet just could not keep the pain levels down and sometimes, I have to double my dosage to get the effect. Currently, this is what I am doing, doubling the dosage of Ultracet. The side effects also came down and I was able to have bowel movement without the aid of laxatives. My stomach bloating, nausea and vomiting improved slightly and I managed to gain back some appetite. But there is still some level of pain. The edema is not improving and even taking 80mg of frusemide to help to drain the excess fluids is not effective.

The pain is getting worst and even after consulting specialist doctors, there are not much help that I can get because the problem is my sensitivity to the side effects of the medications.  I solve one problem but the medication creates another side effect problem. Sometimes, I think I have come to a dead-end again, like sort of an end game. And when it comes to painkillers, do I have other natural choices? Last night, the pain was quite bad and so I took 20mg prolonged released opioid oxycodone painkiller. The pain came down almost immediately like magic. Yesterday, it was the first time I felt happy after taking the painkiller. I was high on drugs! I could not sleep and my mind was floating but happy. It was really a weird experience. The price I paid for taking the painkiller was very dry throat so much so I have to get up few times in the night to drink a lots of water and the bloating became worst. I also developed this vomiting feeling in the morning!

  1. Hi,
I have not yet finished reading your blog. Can I know whether your parents are aware of your condition now, if yes, how did they react?

    Regards,

    1. Yes, my parents are aware of my condition.

I take a view to share with my parents on my actual condition so that when the time comes, it's easier for them to let go of me. I also take the opportunity to explain to them about my disease and how I am fighting this disease using the alternative therapies. Also from the spiritual level on how they should look at my disease.

So far, I can say they have accepted my condition and on their part, they are doing their best to help me in my difficult journey.

  3. Chang,

I just listen to this very inspiring TED talk by one William Li. Maybe you would like to listen to his talk as well.

William Li presents a new way to think about treating cancer and other diseases: anti-angiogenesis, preventing the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor. The crucial first (and best) step: Eating cancer-fighting foods that cut off the supply lines and beat cancer at its own game.

    1. Dear Gary,

I wrote about the talk by William Li on 1 June 2010 and you can read the post following this link http://upekah.blogspot.com/2010/06/can-we-eat-to-starve-cancer.html.

For your information, the Gerson diet is eating food that is good for the body but starve the cancer.

Remember about the metronomic chemotherapy that I wrote about on 7 March 2012 which you can read from this link http://upekah.blogspot.com/2012/03/if-only-i-could.html?

Now you seems impressed with what you have read. Now, can you formulate a treatment plan from what you have learned from the lecture? What I want to say is that in theory, it may sound very good but in practice, it may not be so simple.

But the good news is that I now have a suggested treatment plan based on William Li's lecture:

      1. Anti-angiogenesis - you can use the metronomic chemotherapy to achieve this aim
      2. Starve the cancer - follow any cancer diet like the Gerson diet for example.

In case you don't know, I started taking this treatment plan on 1 May 2012.

    2. Chang,

Obviously, you are thousand steps ahead in this and I was just bumped into this TED talk and was inspired by it.

Important point I learned fro this talk is 'eating cancer fighting foods that cut off the supply lines and beat cancer at itsnown game'.

Perhaps you can share with us here what was your diet or eating habit before you being diagnosed of contracting cancer. You may have touched on this in those links, but I haven't read them. I sure will find time reading those write-ups of yours.

There are many cancer related TED talks by cancer patients themselves. I will not missed listening to them. Nevertheless, state of mind plays a very important part in facing the challenges ahead in fighting cancer, for that matter, whatever things lying ahead.

Thanks Chang, I learned a lot from you. You inspired me as well.

    3. Dear Gary,

If you look at the timeline, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in Sep 2009 and in June 2010, I came across this William Li's article 9 months later. I was a newbie, still searching and learning about alternative treatments.

Anyway, I was even more impressed with William Li's talk than you because in his presentation, he said the cure rate for metastatic kidney cancer was 98%! I thought I found a cure, no need to search anymore.

But my hopes were soon dashed because there was no other information available like where and how to get this treatment. Who I can contact for more information? Maybe the audience who attended the talk were given such information.

Actually, you have brought up a very important point, something I wanted to write about last week but due to severe pain that I am going through, I could could not sit down and have a clear mind to write about it.

Anyway, I will write about it in today's post. In it, I will share with you a tragedy as well.
